As the scholar who penned the collective wisdom of yogic philosophy in the Yoga Sutras, Patañjali deserves praise and tribute.

Before many group practices around the world, an “invocation” or tribute is recited to respect this wise man.  Professor Nagaraja Rao, before any class discussing the Sutras, would recite as follows:

vande gurunam caranaravinde
nihsreyase jangalikayamane
samsara halahala moha santyai

I salute the lotus feet of our great teachers
who uncovers our True Self and awakens happiness
Like a shaman in the Jungle he brings total complete well-beeing.
He can even heal the most awful poison of conditioning and illusion.

yogena cittasya padena vacam
malam sarirasya ca vaidyakena
yopakarottam pravaram muninam
patanjalim pranjalir anato’smi

Let us salute the noblest of sages Patañjali
who gave yoga for serenity and sanctity of mind
grammar for clarity and purity of speech
and medicine for perfection of health

Aum santih santih santih

Aum. Peace, peace, peace.
